Dr. Reddy's and NPPA battle at Delhi High Court over blood pressure drug's price

  • Dr. Reddy's has accused India's National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) of incorrectly revising the ceiling price for the hypertension treatment amlodipine, as reported The Economic Times Tuesday.
  • Specifically, Dr. Reddy's argued in the Delhi High Court that the NPPA is only supposed to revise drug prices every five years, while the ceiling price of amlodipine was fixed under the 2013 drug price control order.
  • The drugmaker also reiterated its plea for a stay of NPPA's order that fixed the ceiling price for the therapy at Rs 2.33 per tablet.
  • Meanwhile, the NPPA explained that the drug price control order permits a revision of ceiling prices either every five years from the date on which the ceiling price is fixed or when the list of essential medicines is revised.
  • Price revision done by NPPA in this case is exactly as per law and there is no ambiguity in this regard," NPPA chairman Bhupendra Singh commented.
